Recruitment: What do teachers want?

This time of the year is EXTREMELY busy in regards to teacher recruitment. We started this process at the end of November and will continue into March. It is our hope to have our staffing completed by the end of February just after the Chinese New Year but there are always last minute changes or things that seem to pop up and force us to review what we had planned.

Recruitment can be difficult given China is currently one of the Top 10 destinations for international teaching jobs in the world and salaries can be quite competitive.

International School staffing is much different and I know that I have written about this in the past but when we do look at staffing for our school and the “IDEAL” CISB teacher there are many things to consider:

Will the individual fit within the teams that we have? How do we carefully manage the personalities and strengths of the incoming staff to match with the existing staff?

How do we maintain consistency and the momentum we have gained moving forward?

Is the teacher resilient and are they able to manage the demands of the job as well as the stress of living away from their home, family and friends?

Do they have knowledge and understanding of current pedagogical and assessment practices?

Do they understand the concept of inquiry based teaching and how it might work in a PYP classroom?

Are they open to growth and coaching?

Do they talk about what they need for success or what students need?

Do they demonstrate the ability to manage conflict and to collaborate with others?

Can they bring any skills, talents or experiences to our team to fill the gaps of the staff that are leaving?

Why are they wanting to move into international education or what has been their experience internationally?

A couple of the questions that we ask our candidates specifically are:

What are you looking for in your next school to match your interests, talents and skills?

What support and feedback do you value from your administrative team?

What do teachers look for in their next school? What do they need? I would really like to hear from teachers who are working internationally or considering the leap into international education about what they value and look for in a school and its leadership team.

Having the right match between teacher, leadership, school, and community is crucial for success. At CSIB we have many strengths and would love the opportunity to dialogue to see if what we offer is indeed what teachers might be looking for in their next school.
